When I was a younglings, these books tend to scared me to be honest. 
I was afraid by their opacity, their robust knowledge and probably because of the effort needed to obtain it for sure. 
It's a nice picture, warm and calm. Just like the confidence and assurance brought by knowledge I think. 
Maybe the ladder, there in the back, represent that. The fact that knowledge gift you with a certain form of elevation. 
Cool sun light too, indeed.
